Memorial Visits 1775

Memorial School 5th Grade and Team 234 visited Lexington and Concord to live the events of the day the "shot heard 'round the world" was fired.  We have spent the past few weeks learning about the causes of our revolution and had the opportunity to act out the events by assuming the roles of actual Concord residents that participated in the battle of April 19th 1775.

Valentines Day

Team 234

Valentine’s Day is around the corner.  Instead of engaging in the traditional exchange of valentines the Fifth Grade team has a tradition to create compliment books for every student.  Over the next weeks the students will be working to write a compliment for everyone of their classmates.  Our compliments will be based upon specific actions or traits that have been observed this year.  Our goal is to recognize those things that are on the inside that make a person special.  The compliments will be specific and avoid superficial statements like “you are nice” or “I like your shirt.”

We will be working on “how to give a compliment” lessons, writing our compliments and putting our books together as our morning work for the next few weeks.  Students will receive their compliment books on Valentine’s Day instead of store bought valentines.  Some students who arrive on late buses or arrive late in the morning may need to complete some of their compliments at home. Please remember not to bring in any food items to give away.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Gutter Boats Final Evaluations!

Rooms 234 and 235 have been hard at work learning about the engineering process the past week.  The children have been given the challenge of building a boat to race down a rain gutter.  They defined the problem and did research to develop possible solutions.  The children created blue prints to design a solution and built a prototype to be tested.  This week was spent testing the prototypes and modifying the designs.  Our final test was today and in the spirit of the men and women of NASA two designers showed the right stuff...

5th Grade Ice Skating 2018

Hello All!

Ice skating notices from the gym teachers went home today.  Skating will run for 5 weeks starting Thursday January 4th thru February 1st.  Your child can bring skates or borrow them free of charge at the Ice Palace.  The notice has a number of helpful hints for parents.

Parent Volunteers are Still Needed!
Chaperones are needed from 8:30-9:30 to assist the children with their skates and for skating instructions.  If you can skate you can teach.  Children are grouped according to ability (beginner, advanced, figure and hockey).  Please return the volunteer form ASAP if you can help in any capacity.

Earth's Place in Our Universe

Hello All,

In science we are exploring Earth's place in our universe.  We have a particular focus on how the sun and stars move across our sky.  We are exploring these mechanics with abstract and explicit models from many points of view.  We are utilizing sun bracelets and sun dials.  This week we explored an outstanding iPad app that allowed us to explore the sky in detail and track the sun's movements throughout the year.  The free app can be downloaded here.  Feel free to explore the sky and look at the stars that make up the constellations in detail.

Have fun exploring.
